Oh! Look what we have here. A hidden gem!
I'll be honest here, when I first saw this film teased (quite a while ago), I was really surprised at how interesting this looked. And I was not disappointed. 'The Short History of the Long Road' follows the story of a young woman in her journey of finding herself really following something rather unthinkable. This seriously is a low-budget production, and yet it still manages to perform really well. What impresses me most is the cinematography of the film, it captures some absolutely beautiful scenes and emotions. I must applaud the performance Sabrina Carpenter gives here because she carries the entire film and it is quite an emotionally straining part to have played (I imagine). I mention her role in particular because this is the first time I have seen her in a role like this where I am used to her from 'Tall Girl' and 'Adventures in Babysitting'. Her performance is incredible and hopefully, this will propel her onto a higher stage in the movie industry. I'm certainly not saying this is one of the best films of 2020, but it is definitely empowering, intriguing and heartfelt. I could certainly watch this again but I don't have much more to say for once - I really, really enjoyed this.
In fact, yes I do. I want to bring it back to Sabrina Carpenter's performance in this. SHE. IS. INCREDIBLE. I mean that. This is a heavy role to carry even if she was in a film where there are more than just her as central characters. This is just her. Sabrina effortlessly carries this role, and really displays some talent in doing so. I mentioned that I imagine this could have been an emotionally straining role to play and I can think of many in the acting industry that would have struggled with this. It definitely is a budget film, no huge $100m+ gone into it, and it shines brightly as if it were produced by a major studio. I urge everyone to watch this at some point in their life. I know it won't be for everyone but it is a seriously good film that needs more attention.
