The Rite (2011)

This. Is. Fantastic. What an unsuspecting film! I knew nothing about this when I began watching it. I only knew that Anthony Hopkins was in it - that was enough to sell it to me. I can't say I'm disappointed. It's a horror by all accounts - elements of fear, the supernatural and religion all playing a huge part of the story. Without giving much away, 'The Rite' is a modern masterpiece of the horror genre. It plays on the things you don't see, and the things you do see are encapsulating and exposing. I really am unsure of how to word this, it was just amazing. There are definitely things that could have been done better or have been added to make the film even better, but that doesn't take away from the amazing film that this is. One of the fantastic concepts presented in the film is in the form of "choosing not to believe in the devil doesn't protect you from him" - something I remember striking me on first viewing. It is a film I don't think I would get bored of, it really offers us a different perspective on religious horror. I wholeheartedly loved watching 'The Rite', and it left me more open to watching other films like this, something I didn't particularly feel any emotional connection to prior.
