It's a different world out there...
I am at a loss for words... in a good way, though. 'Nightcrawler' is hands down one of the very best films of the past decade for so many reasons and I'm going to point out just one; Jake Gyllenhaal. We all know how talented this guy is but he seriously ups the ante in this takes his performance to an elite level. He is sinister, complex, intriguing, funny and charming. These are all words you'd typically associate with a villain such as Loki, but Gyllenhaal's efforts here place him somewhere in No Man's Land. After seeing this a few times now, I still have no idea how to describe his performance as the protagonist. He is just incredible and I can't think of many, in fact, I can't think of anyone who could have done a better job. Despite having some other recognised names in the film, they serve only as severely reduced characters as the narrative of the story centres around Gyllenhaal. This whole film really delves into his psyche and it is just so complex. He is so difficult to read yet so easy to read, at the same time. The whole direction of the film is magnificent, the cinematography is up there with the very best, and I have no doubt that the story is incredible. "Do you know what fear stands for?" - certainly a question that could be re-evaluated after watching this because the picture 'Nightcrawler' paints isn't a pleasant one.
I would say, "enjoy", but I really can't. It's a film like 'Joker', you can't enjoy the story, it's a thriller, but it's also borderline horror. The story appears designed to terrify the viewers, and it does exactly that. I can't say I found the film entertaining as it is a very serious film with so many layers to it. The thing I did enjoy is the reality to everything we see in the film, showing a side to media that we very rarely see as viewers. It is certainly a complicated film led by a complicated character, and I still can't decide if I love him or hate him. Maybe I'll have to watch it another few times to make my mind up. Regardless, this film is incredible, a masterpiece and as I said, one of the best of the 2010s. As much as I find it difficult to enjoy, I love the film.
