All hail the king...
Let me start off by saying that I think every single person in the world who was interested in this film knew that he had big boots to fill. There is no doubt about the immense pressure that was laid on him before filming even started. Joaquin Phoenix absolutely embodied this iteration of the Joker. I have never seen such a drastic differentiation from what we have previously seen for one character as we did with this film. 'Joker' seriously is an incredible movie, and whether people enjoyed it or not, there is absolutely no denying that this was by far the best acting performance of 2019, and is up there with some of the very best ever. He carries this film, dragging it from start to finish, and he does it so elegantly. This isn't a pretty film, it's dark, it's grim, it's haunting, but his outing as the Clown Prince of Crime is not at all anything dull. It shines so brightly in a year crowded with fantastic additions to cinema. So when I say this is the most surprising performance of 2019, I seriously mean that. Who on Earth would have expected him to be a serious challenger to Heath Ledger as the best version of the Joker?
(Note: I'm not saying he's better, he's pleasantly different).
Seriously speaking though, a performance this good for this character was never comprehendible after 'The Dark Knight', because, in my opinion, that is the best piece of acting ever. but this is a fantastic effort to divert the character away from Batman and finally give him his own spotlight. Everything Joaquin does as the Joker is impeccable and I loved the film, I loved his performance and I will continue to do so.
